Building the future of crane engineering: a journey of design, mentorship, and innovation
24. October 2024
I am Antonino Bivona, and I am the head of mechanical department here at MELCAL. After university, I started as mechanical engineer at Bureau Veritas, in Paris. Then, I moved back to Italy by working for a shipyard managed by the Ministry of Defense.
When I received MELCAL’s proposal, I found the company to be dynamic and young, which is why I accepted the challenge. Cranes are extremely complex, composed of many parts, and require various specializations and skills to design and build. I enjoy seeing the process from start to finish and understanding how it works in every detail. On the day of delivery, you know you’ve succeeded. A crane project is the result, without any compromise, between many needs and requirements: customer expectations, rules and regulations, and functionality. It’s all about finding the right balance.
In our team we have junior mechanical engineers coming; I always assist young students with their bachelor’s theses. We must look to the future as well: teaching and training are among my passion.
I believe in continuous learning, including for myself. If you invest your best efforts in new people, hopefully they will take as much from you as they can and improve. I hope that the next man will be better than I am, ensuring that crane design remains efficient and safe.
