It all started in 2012 when we built the first knuckle boom telescopic crane for a leader in offshore wind energy, Ørsted A/S (formerly DONG Energy). MELCAL’s initial steps into the offshore wind industry profited from the company’s extensive know-how in the maritime field. This substation crane was placed on top of P33 windmill substation built for the Danish operator at Chantiers de l’Atlantique (STX) in Saint Nazaire, France.

PREFERRED SUPPLIER
“Being part of such a prominent project was a big honour for us which is why we have worked hard to become a preferred supplier for the wind industry”,
stated MELCAL CEO, Benedetto Catanzaro. Today the MELCAL wind portfolio also includes wind turbine platform davit cranes and nacelle foldable boom cranes, designed to easily, safely and securely handle spare parts and other cargo. With a compact design, our cranes guarantee excellent operational performance even in a limited working area and extreme conditions. The demand for reliability and a long service life are assured through excellent build quality with the use of reliable component suppliers and extensive use of seawater resistant materials.

HIGH QUALITY APPROACH
This high quality approach is further complimented with hot dip galvanized structural bolts and IP67 protection class for electrical components to provide the crane with a high level of protection against the corrosive marine environment. Considering that the expected entire lifecycle of a wind farm is 25 years, MELCAL cranes are a worthwhile investment.

RECENT PROJECTS
Of late, we were awarded once again, by Chantiers de l’Atlantique for the engineering, construction and commissioning of a stiff boom substation crane for the 309MW Rentel offshore wind farm.

Installed to maintain safe and reliable operations, this crane provides man-riding capabilities too. Recently we have been involved in the Ho Ho See and Merkur offshore wind farms with our rental fleet of skid mounted deck cranes and winches to wind farm construction and installation companies for temporary or permanent cargo handling solutions during this crucial development phase.
